I had been to Rome once before. It was on one of those organized trips that goes by at the pace of a strobe light. Rome! - Florence! - Barcelona! - Bye! You've seen both nothing and everything. This time around, it was different and yet the same. It was my mom's first trip to Europe, which meant that seeing the sites was a must, but I was sick with a fever, which meant that I wasn't in the mood to do much else. And so, at the end of this second visit, I found my relationship with this city to be almost in the same place as where we'd picked up. We're like neighbors that live in the same apartment building: we've bumped into each other a couple times and murmured a few pleasantries, but at heart, we are essentially strangers. However, I promise you this, Rome: Some day we will be friends.
